The 38-year-old singer performed a medley of Olivia’s biggest hits at Hamer Hall in Melbourne.

Delta kicked off the emotional tribute with Olivia’s 1980 song Magic, before moving on to Physical and Xanadu.

She then launched into the classic You’re The One That I Want from the smash-hit musical Grease.

Delta changed pace, switching to Olivia’s country-influenced 1973 hit Let Me Be There, then transitioning to Hopelessly Devoted To You, once again from Grease.

‘It is beautiful to see everybody coming out and… It’s beautiful,’ she told reporters.

Goodrem described Newton-John as a ‘light for all of the industry’ who had ‘taught me so much’.

‘I’m so happy to see everybody coming together on a day to celebrate someone who touched all our lives.

‘I think that is really what it is. Seeing everybody just come together and being able to honour and celebrate Olivia is incredibly special.

The service comes six months after Newton-John died in August at the age of 73, after a brave and decades-long battle with cancer.

Newton-John’s career spanned more than 60 years, during which she made 28 studio and six live albums.

She is survived by her husband John Easterling and only daughter Chloe Lattanzi.

Tears flowed at a moving memorial service for Australian singing legend Olivia Newton-John on Sunday.

Delta Goodrem first broke down on the orange carpet at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, ahead of a special performance, as she spoke about why the late star was so special to her.

“It’s beautiful to see everybody,” Goodrem said.

“I’m so happy to see everybody coming together on a day to celebrate someone who touched all of our lives,” she said when asked why she was so emotional. “I think that’s really what it is.”

“Being able to honour and celebrate Olivia is incredibly special.

“I think it’s really important to everybody for healing. Even the fact that it’s meant to be in this moment now. I think for however long it took to be able to come together, this is the moment it’s meant to be so we can all, as Australians - and around the world - all be able to unite together,” she added.

“We all want to have a tear together and talk about how much we love her and how much we appreciate her touching all of our lives.

“I deeply loved Olivia, the woman and the icon, Goodrem continued.

“Our soul was brought together through music - as well as our health journey - but it was singing with her that was the thing we both loved so much.”

Later, during the service, Newton-John’s husband John Easterling also became emotional as he paid tribute to his late wife.

During his speech, Easterling recalled a time he and Newton-John were in Prague together after he had asked her to be “his girl”.

During the trip, the pair talked about some “hard times” they had experienced in their lives previously.

“We were talking about how lucky we were to have found each other,” he said, his voice breaking.

“And how in love we were. And how much happiness we were experiencing.

“I mean in order of magnitude, we thought maybe we should feel guilty because we were so happy. But we decided, we feel gratitude and just let the happiness run at full throttle.”

“I carry and feel Olivia’s presence, her sense of humour and her spirit of adventure, commonality of purpose that we shared,” Easterling said later.

“That gives me the strength to carry on until I find her again in that ultimate space of love and light.”

During his speech, he also spoke of a poignant moment that happened two nights after his wife had died, where he felt her presence - as if she was laying her hand on his body.

“These are the words that fell from my heart: “Olivia, our love for each other transcends our understanding. Every day we expressed our gratitude for this love that could be so deep, so real, so natural,” he said.

“Olivia’s deepest essence she was a healer. Using her mediums of song, word and touch. She was the most courageous woman I have ever met. And her bandwidth for genuinely caring about people, about animals and creatures of all kinds, eclipses almost what is humanly possible.”

Easterling concluded his speech: “At her most difficult times she always had the spirit, the humour and willpower to move things into the light. And as her spirit soars, the pain and holes in my heart are healed by the joy of her love and that light which shines forward. Onward.”

Earlier on Sunday, entertainment journalist Peter Ford said that while it was unusual to have a state memorial so long after Newton-John’s death, “the family weren’t ready for it” before now.

“It was too much too soon,” he said, adding that the new timing meant the event didn’t “have to be so much about grief and loss” but rather a celebration of Newton John’s life.

Among guests to attend the ceremony was Patti Newton - the widow of the late Bert Newton.

“I think we all know we are going to miss her terribly but I think she would want us to be celebrating her,” Newton said.

The public farewell for the beloved Grease and Xanadu was streamed live on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Some of the stars and friends who paid video tributes to Newton-John during the service included Elton John, Dolly Parton, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Pink and RuPaul.

Those in the audience for the service included Dannii Minogue, Molly Meldrum Olivia’s daughter Chloe Lattanzi and extended family and friends.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews also attended.

Delta Goodrem reveals why she keeps her relationship out of the limelight

Delta Goodrem has revealed why she likes to keep her relationship with her guitarist boyfriend Matthew Copley out of the limelight.

The Aussie singer has had a number of high-profile romances - including Westlife’s Brian McFadden and Nick Jonas - and she now wants to be more low-key.

Speaking to Australian Woman’s Weekly, Delta admitted that she learnt quite young that she prefers to keep her romantic relationships more private.

The couple first met while on tour in 2017 as Matthew is the guitarist in her band, and a year later it was revealed that they were official.

‘[Matthew] is my guitarist, I met him through music,’ Delta told the publication.

‘It’s incredible to be on stage with him because he’s so talented. We really are a team.

‘He’s my best friend, he’s kind and just a beautiful human being. But I learnt quite young that I enjoy keeping part of that private.

‘I’ve always been so understanding that I’ve lived in the public eye since I was a teenager but also I think it’s nice to keep some things to yourself.’

Speaking to InStyle Australia in 2018, the former Voice coach said that she made the decision to keep her relationships somewhat out of the public eye when she turned 30.

‘I made a conscious decision when I was 30 that I’m not somebody who wants to talk about relationships,’ the now 38-year-old said.

Delta said she still finds it hard to talk about Olivia Newton John’s death as she continues to grieve her good friend and idol

‘I made a [choice] that I’m not even going to comment “yes” or “no” … I’ve said nothing for three or four years — all I’ve kept saying is “I’m single and I’ll let you know when I’m in a serious relationship.” And I will.’

As the country gets ready for Olivia Newton John’s State memorial in Melbourne, Delta said she still finds her death hard to talk about as she continues grieving her good friend and idol.

‘I don’t have the words yet,’ she said.

‘I’d love to be more eloquent for you. I find it really hard to talk about because I was very lucky to have such a special bond, a real kindred. We were always there for each other in a beautiful mentorship and friend way.’

For anyone assuming Goodrem must have an expensive and time-consuming beauty regimen, you might want to think again.

The Lost Without You singer has revealed that she uses a $16 cleanser that’s available at most supermarkets.

“I keep it pretty simple,” she recently told Marie Claire.

“I’ll use a Cetaphil cleanser and moisturiser and then I love hydrating and Vitamin C serums, which have been really good for my skin.”

Goodrem said she loved using affordable skincare and makeup products, with Revlon being a firm favourite.

Her beauty bag usually contains Revlon Colorstay Awaken Concealer, which retails for around $18, and the Glow Powder Blush, which costs around $20.

Her glossy locks are helped along by slightly pricier products, however.

Goodrem said she used an Olaplex conditioner that costs around $54 and an Oribe hair mask that retails for about $92.

But one of her favourite products is a leave-in conditioner by Goldwell that retails for a much more affordable $25.

As for getting red-carpet ready, Goodrem said there were a number of preparatory things she did to make sure she was looking her best.

“Before I do a major makeup for something or even just a natural look, prepping things like eyedrops, eye cream and moisturiser, a hair mask before you blow dry, makes everything easier,” she revealed.

Some of her other beauty and skincare tips include drinking celery juice every morning, making sure to remove her makeup at the end of every day, and trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Speaking to Beauty Crew in 2018, Goodrem said she couldn’t go to sleep unless she’d washed her face first.

“I can’t go to bed with makeup on, or it’s very rare for me to do that,” she said.

“I’d have to have had one too many wines to not take off my makeup!”

But the most important beauty tip of all, according to the multiple ARIA Award winning singer?

Having a “beautiful heart.”

“With all my heart, I believe that beauty starts from the inside,” she told The House of Wellness.

“With a beautiful heart, you are perfectly beautiful inside and out.”
